New Year's Resolutions - How to Approach Them Different

It is almost that time of year again. At the beginning of every new year, motivation increases among all. A new fresh start brings high hopes and aspirations. With determination overflowing, how is that we rarely see our goals come to fruition? Some common mistakes: requires too much time, loss of motivation, or circumstances don’t allow. With strategic planning and realistic goal setting, you can achieve your goals quicker than you think.

First, understand that you need to approach your goals different. Try thinking outside the box and get creative with your goals. That same goal to lose 20 pounds that you set every year might not be the best.

Here is a list of the top 10 most common New Year’s Resolutions:

  1. Exercise more
  2. Lose weight
  3. Get organized
  4. Learn a new skill or hobby
  5. Live life to the fullest

  10. Read more

Goals are simply a nice thought if given no parameters or metrics. You cannot achieve what you cannot MEASURE. Set specific numbers, deadlines, weights, or anything that can be measured. For example, take the most common goal to exercise more. What does “more” mean? How many times will you exercise per week? How long will you exercise every session? When will you track your progress? If we ask ourselves these types of questions, we make sure that our goals can be MEASURED

Here are just a few thoughts to help with your New Year’s Resolutions:

  • Prepare yourself mentally
  • Set goals that motivate you
  • Be realistic and specific
  • Break up bigger goals into smaller goals
  • Write down goals where you can see them frequently
  • Involve someone else to hold you accountable
